Torrance, California. In 1978, Rorion Gracie began teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu out of a two-car garage in nearby Hermosa Beach. What started with a handful of students quickly grew, leading to the opening of the first Gracie Academy in the United States in Torrance in 1989. Those early days helped shape the future of American Jiu-Jitsu and eventually led to the creation of the UFC.
